Some stuff

This is just some random stuff that has been on my mind. You never know when life is going to hit you with the bad stuff so you had best live it to the fullest!

My wife is amazing and I love her so much. I can’t fathom the thought of losing her. And now my baby boy too… I see so many people going through hardship and I can’t bear to imagine the thought of losing one of my own. How do people do it?

My heart goes out to them.

Anyway, like I said – totally random, but I just had to vent a little. I guess the holidays are getting to me….

phpBB Anti-Spambots

As many people know, phpBB forums are great, but also ripe for spammers. And while there are tons of suggestions and modifications over at the forums — nothing actually stops the spambots from registering. You have to install a bunch of different mods, and even then it only does a half-assed job of slowing the spam down. Lots of the mods also depend on moderators activating or deleting the spam accounts.

Not only that, but many of them are complicated and take a while to install, and if you upgrade to newer versions of phpBB, you can break those mods and will have to re-install them.

Well thank goodness there’s finally a reliable, simple solution.

About The Code

This script is simple to install, even for beginners: it will probably take just a minute or two and you only have to modify 1 file! Again, unlike other soutions – this one just works and you don’t need ANY other mods to go along with it. What it does is stops spambots from automatically registering to a phpBB forum.

It’s just a few lines of code, but I spent a LOT of time getting it to work right, so I’m asking for $5 via Payal. While I love open-source, I also feel people should be compensated for their time and effort (so long as they don’t get greedy). I feel this is fair for the work I’ve done on it. Of course, if you feel like it’s worth more to you, a larger donation is always welcome.

Installation takes a minute and you only have to modify 1 file. Full details are in the install.txt file

I run two forums and after installing this mod, I have had ZERO spambots registering. Yes, you will still get a few manual spammers here and there, but most won’t take the time to sit there and domanual registrations. Check out the memberlists at and for proof. (They’re not linked to, you’ll have to add /memberlist.php after the URL.)

If, for some reason, this code doesn’t stop bots for you I will refund your donation within the first 30 days. I can’t guarantee it will work forever because the spammers always have ways of catching up — but this is the first solution that actually STOPS spambots in their tracks at the present.

(Which is another reasons I think it’s worth the $5 bucks!!!)

News for now

Well I have a new job that I love doing what I like best: web design and development. I’m more on the dev side now, as we have guys that come up with the designs. (What a relief that is to not have to be left and right brained at the same time!)

I’m back on caffiene after a few months without it. I had quit due to some health issues, but apparently coffee wasn’t the cause of it (so far so good, knock on wood). And lord, what you can accomplish with just a bit of coffee. Granted, I hate the downs, but I can put up with them for the feeling of having energy for most of the day. Besides, usually when on the downswing is when I’m at home, relaxin’ or playing poker.

I miss writing and I know there’s a good outlet for it somewhere – I just don’t know what yet. I have the beginnings of an idea where I could talk about all things Web, perhaps on a blog for my new company.

Getting geared up for the elections soon … I’m Independent but will be doing something I never have before: voting down a party line. All Dems, buddy. Yeah it’s the only way to send a message that we’re fed up with the BS going on. Don’t even get me started about the beginnings of a clamp-down on online poker.

Also, heading up to WNY for the weekend. It’s my nephew J.P.’s wedding reception and it should be fun. I’ll get to survey the damage from the recent storm up there. Apparently folks were still w/o power after 2 weeks. Yeah, it was much worse than people realized: lots of broken branches downed power lines everywhere. (It sounds like the ice [*%##!]-storm we had in ohio 04/05.)

Biggie update cuz it’s been a while

Just some quick updates, because I feel I owe you that.

I am addicted to KOTOR2, the videogame otherwise known as Knights of the old republic 2. It’s been eons since I found a game so compelling, fun, and downright different than all the standard genres of games. It’s a whole universe and the game is really long, although it never gets boring. The voice acting is movie-quality, and the storyline is dramatic: it feels much closer to the original Star Wars than the prequel. Wow, just wow. But I’m selling my Xbox 360 because it blows and there aren’t any games I like for it. It’s seriously Microsoftish (lots of bugs, it eats my discs, backwards compatibility is horrendous, etc.). I’ll be getting an old Xbox just for KOTOR 1 & 2.

Work is great, it’s all I hoped for. It’s the change from a medium-sized corporate place that had no clue what to do with the Web, to a small and hip company that’s very knowledgeable about the Web. At my old place I was pretty much put in a corner and worked alone (after our Web team was split up that is) and I missed working with people on projects. The give and take is really rewarding, you learn a lot, and there’s a lot of energy there.

I miss the Com Net peeps for sure, but I don’t miss how management did business. It was a cluster*%$@, with all the corporate backstabbing to boot.  HTML Samurai related to me a tale of how someone is trying to micromanage the web stuff without having the first inkling of what the Web is. I feel for my homey and told him it sounds like a metaphor: It’s the beaurocrat sitting in the pentagon telling the general how to fight his war. It’s how we lost Vietnam, and it’s how major time gets wasted and people get frustrated in real life. People: let the experts do what they do best! That’s why you’re paying them, after all….

But at least i don’t have to worry about that. I do have to deal with clients, but so far (*knock on wood*) it has been a breath of fresh air. Yes, you have to keep them happy, but it’s far easier than dealing with internal power struggles. Plus this place is run properly: they give you little freedoms such as flex time, which get you invested in the company. I am happy to work overtime most days because I know the company cares about me. You’ve gotta give to get back, and companies that know that will be rewarded ten-fold. I’d do whatever it takes to help this company do well, while at my old place I wouldn’t work a minute past five.

On another note I met up with an old friend with in Buffalo a few weeks ago for my nephews wedding. It was great to see him and now I want to go back more often and re-connect with more old friends. I need to stay motivated and confident enough to do that, but lately it’s been tough — the change in season has had me down a bit, but I think I’m finally getting over that.

The wedding was cool and I’m happy for my nephew J.P. – his wife seems awesome, they have one kid and one on the way, he has a great job and a house in the best area ever (right by Ralph Wilson Stadium). She has helped him clean his act up a lot and I’m proud of them both!

Also hung out with my new sis and bro-in-law while in the Buff. They are the absolute coolest and went to the wedding with us. We hit a bar afterwards and they didn’t want to pay the cover charge (further poof that we’re blood, because I rarely will pay it either!). They kept on the bouncer, kept pestering him saying they weren’t paying the cover and that the bar should pay US to drink there. Eventually he relented and we were let in. (Major props to the Popovskis)

Oh – and they had BUBBLE HOCKEY there! I love the game and you can’t find it anywhere in Ohio that I know of. Lynn wouldn’t play, but I got a few games in against Mary Kay and Billy. Mary Kay either picked it up real quick or had played before and it took a lucky bounce in OT for me to pull off a win. Ahh what fun. Oh, and Billy cooked us up a couple of pizzas for the trip home and they were AWESOME. I miss that good old Buffalo-style pizza, and the ones from his place are realllllly good. He was trying out a new sesame-seed crust that took some getting used to but was quite tasty.

Ok that’s it for now, I’ve typed for quite a while 🙂

2 Months Later…

Holy Cow! I can not believe it has already been two months since I last updated this site. I see it everyday but for some reason everything else has kept me from updating.

I can not believe Emma will be two months old tomorrow (Nov. 27). It seems as though it was just yesterday we were bringing her home for the very first time. Now that I look back at those pictures I can’t believe how much she has grown. At her one month doctors appointment she was 12 pounds 6 ounces and 22 inches long. Tomorrow she has her next doctors appointment where we will find how much she grew this month. She will receive the first round of her vaccinations as well.

Being a Dad has been so much fun. I really love nothing more than curling up on the couch with her and either talking to her and watching all the funny faces she makes or enjoying the precious naps she takes on my chest.

Overall she has been a great baby thus far. She is starting to sleep longer through the night. Last night she slept from about 9:30 pm till about 5 am. The only time she really cries is when she is wet, hungry, or overly tired. We are really lucky to have a child like her, especially after all the horror stories you hear of other children who are not as content.

Today Emma visited with Santa for the very first time. She seemed to enjoy her time with the jolly bearded man dressed in red and had her picture taken. I wonder what she asked for?

Black Friday update

Work is going great – I still just love my job. I’m re-energized with all things Web-related. I’ve quit online poker for the most part to focus more on learning, living, and loving. Ok, that’s corny – it’s probably more like wanting to waste less time gridning it out and spend my free time doing fun stuff instead, like video games, or at the very least, improving my Web dev. skillset.

Speaking of video games, I’m very tempted by the new Nintendo Wii. It’s been a long time since a company has come out with something so revoilutionary (heh… the original name of the Wii was the Revoultion). Plus most of the games that have been out the past several years have been the same things over and over and over…

And I LOVE video games. Ever since the Atari 2600 at my brother Ray’s I was hooked. But the last game system to get me this excited was the original PlayStation. The PS2 served it’s purpose, but it really wasn’t anything new: just improved graphics. The Xbox is ok too, but again, no real big changes and no fun new games – about the only thing that piqued my interst on it is Start Wars – Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2.

The 360 absolutely sucks. I owned one and have since sold it. It was buggy, ate my game discs, and again, nothing revolutionary and exciting about the games or the gameplay. Same old [*%##!].

But the Wii… now this is what I’m talking about! Of course, I’ll have to actually play it first, but it sounds like the cat’s pajamas.

Ok but enough about video games.

I’ve got a poker tourney tonight – the first in a long time. It should be fun, but of course, I’d like to play well and make the money. I’d love to win my first one ever – it would validate years of training and studying. Buuut, again with variance and everything all you can do is play your best and hope everything pans out well.

Turkey day was good: I just kinda hung low and worked on some website for a while, then went over to my Aunt Barbe and Uncle Jim’s. I talked to Family back in Buffalo, including my neice Michelle whom I hadn’t talked to in years… it was really nice to hear her voice.

My video iPod is also crapping out on me and I’m not sure why. It’s still under warranty, but I think I’ll fix it and then sell it. I’m just not sure about hard-drive-based players anymore.

That’s the news and I am outta here.

Introducing Emmalyn Lucia Becker

What a week it has been. While I try and play catch up here is some information of Emma’s first few days on this wacky planet.

I just wanted to introduce you all to Emmalyn Lucia Becker. We were
scheduled for a C-Section at 7:15 am on September 27, however Beth’s
water broke around midnight and they decided to do the C-Section right
away. So Emmalyn Lucia Becker was born at 1:34 am on September 27,
2007. She weighs 10 pounds 6 ounces and is 20 inches long. Both
Mother and Baby are doing well.
